Gumroad is a deliberately simple storefront with a broad Merchant of Record model. Whop is a much larger commerce and access ecosystem built around payments, communities, courses, software, apps and marketplace distribution.

Updated August 2026. This comparison gives current seller terms more weight than marketing copy where the wording differs.

Whop vs Gumroad: the practical differences

Area

Whop

Gumroad

Core product

Commerce, payments, access products, communities and marketplace

Simple digital-product and membership storefront

Direct-sale pricing

Domestic cards start at 2.7% + $0.30, with additional fees in some cases

10% + $0.50 on profile and direct-link sales

Marketplace

Large Whop marketplace and affiliate ecosystem

Gumroad Discover, with a 30% fee on discovery sales

Tax / Merchant of Record

Seller terms define the role by configuration and tax mode

Gumroad states it is Merchant of Record for all sales

Courses and community

Strong modular access environment

Courses and memberships supported, but community is not the center of the product

Email and portability

Commerce-first; audit external email needs

Broadcasts, workflows and explicit customer/follower export

Gumroad has stayed simple while Whop has expanded

Gumroad is still easy to explain. Upload a product, set a price, publish a storefront or direct link, and sell. It supports downloads, courses, memberships, subscriptions, license keys and email communication without asking the creator to assemble a traditional ecommerce stack.

Whop has moved in the opposite direction. A Whop can contain chat, courses, livestreams, forums, files, software access and other apps around the same commercial relationship. The platform also operates a broad payments and marketplace layer.

That makes the decision less about “which checkout is better?” and more about whether you need a storefront or a commerce operating environment.

Whop is much cheaper on the clean domestic-card headline

Whop currently starts at 2.7% + $0.30 for a successful domestic card transaction. International cards, currency conversion and some optional services can add cost.

Gumroad currently charges 10% + $0.50 for direct or profile sales and 30% when a new customer discovers and buys through Gumroad Discover. On a straightforward direct sale, the difference is large.

The catch is that the products are not selling the same service. Gumroad’s fee includes a broad Merchant of Record role and the associated tax handling. Whop’s cost is more modular. Price the configuration you will actually use.

The Merchant of Record wording needs careful reading

Gumroad’s current pricing page is explicit: it says Gumroad has acted as Merchant of Record for all sales since January 1, 2025 and handles sales-tax collection and remittance worldwide within that model.

Whop’s public materials use Merchant of Record language too, but its current Seller Terms are more specific. They describe Whop’s Merchant of Record role in the context of Whop Collects and Remits Mode and transaction taxes in supported jurisdictions, while limiting what that role means for the seller’s underlying product and customer obligations.

If Merchant of Record status affects your tax or accounting setup, read the governing terms for your exact configuration. A label on a marketing page is not enough. The broader legal distinction is covered in Merchant of Record for Creators.

Marketplace economics only make sense if the marketplace finds customers

Gumroad Discover charges 30% when it introduces a new customer. That sounds high until you separate incremental demand from demand you generated yourself. Paying 30% for a customer you would never have reached can be rational. Paying it for somebody who already follows you is expensive.

Whop’s discovery model is broader and more deeply integrated with its product ecosystem and affiliates. The same principle applies: measure whether the platform is actually creating acquisition rather than assuming marketplace presence equals demand.

Whop is stronger for living access products

If a course needs chat, livestreams, community or other gated experiences around it, Whop has the stronger architecture. Paid groups, software and coaching can also live inside the same commercial environment.

Gumroad is better suited to products that can be sold and delivered with less ongoing platform interaction. Self-paced courses, downloads, ebooks and straightforward memberships fit that model well.

Gumroad deserves more credit for email and export

Gumroad’s current feature set includes email broadcasts, automated workflows and explicit import/export tools for followers and customers. That matters because a simple storefront does not have to mean giving up every direct audience channel.

Whop is more commerce-oriented. Creators who rely heavily on acquisition email and nurture should audit what remains inside a dedicated CRM or email platform before comparing total stack cost.

How I would choose between Whop and Gumroad

I would choose Gumroad for a small or relatively simple digital-product catalog when Merchant of Record tax handling and low operational complexity matter more than the percentage fee. I would choose Whop when the business needs community, modular access products, marketplace distribution, software or a broader commerce layer.

I would not choose either from the payment percentage alone. Customer portability, support, tax responsibility and the software still needed around the platform can move the economics more than a few points on checkout.

Where Bonzai enters the comparison

Bonzai is relevant when the real problem is the stack around the sale: products, courses, coaching, community, subscriber capture, email and affiliation. Its current pricing states that no creator-managed Stripe or PayPal account is required. Platform fees are volume-based, from 6% to 1% in EUR and from 5% to 0.7% in USD, plus banking fees.

Disclosure: I am Jean-Marie Cordaro, Founder & CEO of Bonzai.pro. The total comparison still depends on international transactions, optional services, tax handling and the rest of the software stack.

Is Gumroad a Merchant of Record?

Yes. Gumroad says it is Merchant of Record for all sales and handles sales-tax collection and remittance within its model.

Is Whop a Merchant of Record?

Whop uses Merchant of Record language, but its current Seller Terms define the role more narrowly by configuration and tax mode. Read the current contract for the exact setup you intend to use.

Official sources and related guides

Current documentation: Whop pricing, Whop Seller Terms, Whop Buyer Terms, Gumroad pricing and Gumroad features.

Related reading: Best Whop Alternatives in 2026, Best Gumroad Alternatives in 2026, Merchant of Record for Creators and Creator Platform Fees Compared in 2026.

About the author

Jean-Marie Cordaro is Founder & CEO of Bonzai.pro.
